This flag was adopted on July 27, 1640. The colors of the flag are white, gold and blue. The flag was designed inMarch 30, 1877. The designer is unknown but probably inspired by the biblical phrase hope we have as an anchor of the soul. The design has thirteen stars representing the original thirteen colonies which were also displayed on the flags flown by the Continental Regiments during the Revolution. Below the anchor is a blue ribbon that has the word HOPE on it, which is the state motto. All outdoor flags are finished with heading and brass grommets (H&G). PH denotes pole hem for indoor and parade use. PHF denotes pole hem and gold fringe.
