This flag was adopted on February 19, 2003. The colors of the flag are red, white, blue, gold, black and a cord of gold and silver. The flag was designed in1879. The designer is Colonel Herman H. Perry. The design has three stripes consisting of red-white-red, and a blue square in the upper left hand corner. The blue square contains a ring of thirteen white stars around the state’s gold coat of arms. In the coat of arms, the arch represents the state’s constitution and the pillars represent the three branches of government. The words of the state motto are Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation. They are wrapped around the pillars, guarded by a male figure dressed in colonial attire. A sword is drawn to represent the defense of the state’s constitution. Another motto, In God We Trust, is underneath the images representing the state’s foundation. The ring of stars that surrounds the state’s coat of arms represents Georgia as one of the original thirteen colonies. It is based on the first national flag of the Confederacy. All outdoor flags are finished with heading and brass grommets (H&G). PH denotes pole hem for indoor and parade use. PHF denotes pole hem and gold fringe.
