Annin Celebrates 235th Birthday of the American Flag

Company helping stitch American flag U.S. Olympic Team will take to London

Roseland, NJ – June 12, 2012 – Annin Flagmakers, the oldest and largest flagmaker in the United States, will celebrate Flag Day this Thursday, June 14, and is encouraging all Americans to honor our nation by proudly flying the red, white and blue.  This summer, Americans can also show their national pride by visiting and adding a virtual stitch to the flag that is being created by the professional seamstresses at Annin to accompany Team USA to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Flag Day was observed for the first time in 1877 on the 100th anniversary of the adoption of our country’s banner. June 14, 1777, marked its official recognition by the Continental Congress, however the flag we’re familiar with today was adopted on July 4, 1960, following the inclusion of Hawaii in the United States of America.

“The United States flag is a sign of the nation, great and strong,” remarked Sandy Van Lieu, Senior Vice President at Annin Flagmakers and Flag Manufacturers Association of America Chairman. “Annin takes great pride in its connection to the birth of our nation through this patriotic symbol, especially on Flag Day.”

The U.S. flag will be front and center this summer as the country comes together in support of our athletes during the London Olympic Games. Annin is proud to partner with the United States Olympic Committee on the Raise Our Flag program and champion the spirit of the American people as they follow the athletes’ journeys to London. Many people, however, do not realize what it takes to get them there. The U.S. Olympic Team receives no government funding and relies on individual donations and corporate support to prepare for and compete in the Games.

Raise Our Flag gives every American the chance to support our Olympic and Paralympic athletes by contributing a stitch to the American flag that will accompany them to London.  Supporters can purchase a single stitch in the flag for $12 by visiting now through July 12. Every stitch and unique dedication is honored on the site’s donor wall and can be shared on Facebook and Twitter.

Annin Flagmakers are creating the flag reflecting the thousands of donated stitches from the campaign.

“All of us at Annin Flagmakers are proud to be part of the Team behind the Team” said Mary E. Repke, Vice President of Marketing at Annin Flagmakers. “We are honored to be working with the USOC to create this special flag and are thrilled to show our support for U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes as they head to London this summer.”
